Challenge Complete

The Edinburgh Cycle Challenge has now ended. Feel free to log in on the A Better Way to Work website and continue to log your trips, mileage and set personal goals.

The Edinburgh Cycle Challenge ran from 10 - 30 May 2010. 2,069 people from 80 organisations took part, logging an incredible 121,874 miles via 13,744 trips. The Challenge inspired 258 new cyclists to take to their bikes. 29% of registrants were non-cyclists (cycling less than once a month) and 22% were occasional cyclists (cycling 1-4 times a month).

A second campaign followed the May Workplace Challenge. The Friends & Family Cycle Challenge engaged new and existing Challenge participants with the aim for them to encourage as many friends and family to also get involved in the competition which ran from 2 - 22 August 2010. 515 people including 154 people who hadn't ridden in the last year, cycled 35, 875 miles.

Three months after the 2010 Edinburgh Cycle Challenge:

  • 51% of non-cyclists reported cycling 1-3 times a month or once a week
  • 58% of occasional cyclists reported cycling at least two days a week
  • 61% of non-cyclists reported cycling to work in the 4 weeks before the 3 months survey

"A great way for me to find out that it is easier to cycle to work than I thought and on occasions just as quick to cycle with the added bonus of feeling self righteous about the exercise.” – Non-Cyclist

“The Challenge was a great idea that kick-started a whole cycling initiative in my workplace. It also helped to make me think about using the bike for shorter local journeys that I would previously have simply jumped in the car for.” – Occasional Cyclist

"Great way to encourage people back on their bikes or on to their bikes more!" – Regular Cyclist
